Become a Reader Sponsor for Readers Are Leaders
As the United States celebrates September as National Literacy Month, The Brunswick County Literacy Council is celebrating with our Readers Are Leaders campaign. The need for Literacy support is great. The shocking truth
of the literacy crisis in America plays out every day in classrooms where 25 million children are not proficient readers. According to research from the Business Roundtable, 42% report problems finding qualified applicants
with strong reading and writing skills. Many Americans read below the level needed to earn a living wage.
To help bring attention to the illiteracy existing in our own county, we are asking our community leaders to read a favorite passage or book that was either important to their own pathway to literacy or that they enjoyed reading
to their kids or grandchildren (or anyone else). We will video each reading and we will then share those videos on each day of the month of September (some days will have more than one video).
Our desire for the Readers Are Leaders campaign is to inspire families and encourage/educate volunteers and literacy advocates to the difference they can make in the lives of adults and children through the power of literacy. Literacy is the fundamental building block to an individual’s future and is the skillset that opens doors to a world of opportunity and possibilities.
